McWane Ductile Iron Poles Prove Their Metal

When Bart Borden and Jimmy Isom of Cleveland Utilities Board in Cleveland, Tennessee met with McWane Poles last year to learn about ductile iron poles, they were curious about how this new product would perform. After hearing about the many advantages of using ductile iron as distribution poles they agreed to be one of the first utilities to try this new product.

Bart and Jimmy learned firsthand about the strength, durability, and reliability of McWane Poles after a recent storm, when 60 mph straight line winds came through Cleveland. On this stormy night in August 2009, a large hickory tree fell between the McWane ductile iron pole and a wood pole completely destroying the tops of the wood poles on either side of the McWane pole. Bart reported that the McWane ductile iron pole was apparently unfazed.

Rick Simpson, National Sales Manager for McWane Poles ran into Bart at the annual TVPPA E & O meeting where Bart stated, “Our guys are singing the praises of this pole. All the insulators were stripped off the pole, but they didn’t think this pole moved one inch and the ground around the pole was completely undisturbed. I don’t believe that any other pole we use in this application would have survived undamaged like this one did.”

As a result of the performance of McWane’s ductile iron pole under these adverse conditions, Bart Borden plans to include McWane Poles in his future distribution pole needs.
